HISTORY

History
Founded in 1853 for German Catholics in the South Bronx, the Parish Church of the Immaculate Conception initially operated from a wooden structure. In 1887, a larger Romanesque Revival church designed by Henry Bruns was built, featuring a 215-foot spire. Over the years, additional buildings, including a rectory, school hall, and convent, were added.

As the neighborhood changed, Spanish-speaking residents replaced the original German community. Today, the parish serves a diverse congregation, though its iconic steeple, a landmark for over a century, was removed due to deterioration and never replaced.

Community Support
The parish is committed to serving both the spiritual and practical needs of the community, offering programs that provide support, faith enrichment, and outreach services.
